Bayern Munich had a bitter end to their Champions League campaign on Wednesday. Paris Saint-Germain clinched a 1-1 draw at Allianz Arena to win the semi-final tie 6-5 on aggregate. It took added time in the second half for Bayern to find the equaliser as PSG delivered a resilient performance after going ahead in the third minute of the game.
Vincent Kompany’s men have played exhilarating football this season, scoring goals at an incredible rate. However, they were completely stifled by Paris Saint-Germain. They struggled to create chances consistently on Wednesday as PSG adopted a more conservative approach than the one they had in the first leg.
Despite the disappointing exit from the Champions League, Bayern can still have a good end to the season if they manage to beat VfB Stuttgart in the DFB Pokal. The Bundesliga title is sealed, so Die Roten can end the campaign with a domestic double.
Bayern have to ensure they add more depth to the squad during the summer transfer window. Kompany has done well with a smaller squad this season, but adding more quality to the squad will help him to take the team to the next level.
Former Bayern CEO Oliver Kahn believes Bayern need a specific profile in the midfield to control the game against European rivals. While talking to Sky Sports in Germany, Kahn insisted that Bayern need a midfielder like Thiago Alcantara, someone who is very strong technically. The former Bayern goalkeeper believes that the current squad has very similar profiles of midfielders, so they need someone who is very sound technically.
"The types of players in Bayern's current midfield are very similar in their style. In my opinion, Thiago was a very important factor because he was completely different. His special technique, his ability to outmaneuver opponents, his exceptional passes. This type of player is currently missing. I can well imagine that the people in charge are thinking about exactly that and that they would like to have such a type of midfielder again in the squad in the future."Oliver Kahn
Bayern could sign a midfielder in the summer
The Bundesliga champions will be parting ways with Leon Goretzka in the summer on a free transfer. The Bavarian club has already re-signed Noel Aseko Nkili to add more depth in the midfield next season. Tom Bischof is also expected to get more game time in the midfield next season after playing in several other positions this season.
Bayern could sign a midfielder in the summer as they have shown concrete interest in Kennet Eichhorn from Hertha BSC. The teenager has been delivering impressive performances at the senior level, which has ensured top clubs across Europe are showing interest in him.
Kahn does have a point when it comes to adding more guile and creativity in central midfield. This type of midfield profile can help them to break down stubborn defences effectively. However, the Bavarian club is not currently linked with such a type of midfielder.
