Substitutions make the difference

Credit has to go to Vincent Kompany for turning things around after the half-time interval. To start the second half, he replaced Sacha Boey at right-back with Raphael Guerreiro and also brought on Konrad Laimer in place of Dayot Upemanco, who had been booked in the first half. To compensate for Upamecano’s departure, Leon Goretzka shifted from midfield to center-back to partner Kim Min-jae in the heart of the defense.

Later on, Bayern’s formation effectively became 2-4-4, and with the introductions of Serge Gnabry and Lennart Karl, the turnaround was achieved. In a space of less than 20 minutes, Gnabry set up Kimmich for the first goal; Guerreiro scored the second after being played through by Olise, and Karl, with another stunning strike from distance, which left the keeper rooted to the spot, made it 3-0 in minute 80.

With this win, Kompany again showed that he knows which buttons to push in challenging times. He will have to continue doing so while his options remain relatively limited.
