Bayern Munich hosted a resilient Union Berlin side on matchday nine of the ongoing Bundesliga season. The team from the German capital arrived in Munich in fourth place in the Bundesliga while boasting the second-best defensive record in the league after conceding only five goals in eight games.

Thanks to a solid team performance, Bayern clinched a comfortable 3-0 win against Union Berlin. Harry Kane and Kingsley Coman were on the scoresheet for the hosts.

Ahead of Bayern’s all-important upcoming Champions League clash with Benfica on Wednesday let us take a look at the key takeaways from Saturday evening’s victory over Union Berlin at the Allianz Arena.

Third straight clean sheet

On numerous occasions this season, Bayern’s glaring flaw has been their vulnerability to counter-attacks despite dominating possession. Understandably, how Bayern has conceded goals this season has kept Vincent Kompany and his center-back pairing of Kim Min-jae and Dayot Upamecano in the spotlight for the wrong reasons.

In the last three games, Bayern have turned a corner concerning that vulnerability to counter-attacking moves. Since losing 4-1 to Barcelona in the Champions League, Die Roten have scored 12 goals in their last three matches without conceding a goal, including this 3-0 victory over Union Berlin.

It wasn’t a perfect defensive performance by any means against Union Berlin, but Upamecano and Kim Min-jae can feel good about themselves as their performances are trending in the right direction. With the clash against Benfica being a must-win game to avoid setting off alarm bells, another clean sheet on Wednesday against the Portuguese side would be a welcomed accomplishment.
