Neuer has started yet another season as number one for Bayern. The 40-year-old had a decent last season. He made a U-turn on his international retirement and played for Germany at the World Cup. The experienced goalkeeper decided to continue playing at the top level for one more season.
Jonas Urbig acts as the deputy to Neuer at Bayern. The former FC Köln goalkeeper has looked assured in the goal whenever he has played for Die Roten. The club chiefs are backing him to be the long-term successor to Neuer. Sven Ulreich plays the role of third-choice goalkeeper in the current squad.
Neuer has already hinted that this could be his last year at the top level of football. The German international will likely bring the curtains down on a long, illustrious career at the end of the season. Urbig is well positioned to succeed him, but Die Roten will need a new number two, so they have started identifying targets for next summer.
Bayern looking for Bundesliga-proven goalkeeper
The record Bundesliga champions are focusing on exploring moves for Bundesliga goalkeepers. According to Bild, Bayern have Augsburg's Finn Dahmen at the top of their list of targets. The Bavarian club has not held talks with Dahmen. It is too early to pursue a move for the 28-year-old goalkeeper, as there is a lot of time for the summer transfer window.
Die Roten want to sign a goalkeeper who is experienced but not too old. The new goalkeeper will join the club as a number two, providing cover for Urbig.
Along with Dahmen, Köln's Marvin Schwäbe is on the list of targets for Bayern. The 31-year-old can become an option for Die Roten if signing Dahmen is not plausible next summer. Bayern believe that Neuer and Ulreich will retire together at the end of the season.
It makes sense for Bayern to look for a Bundesliga-proven goalkeeper, as the new signing will have a seamless transition. Moreover, experience in the Bundesliga will ensure they can fill in for Urbig whenever needed. The Bavarian club may not spend heavily in this position as they are confident about Urbig doing well as the number one.
