Bayern Munich were expected to strengthen the full-back position this summer. They were expected to sign a left-back and right-back, but eventually settled on signing a left-sided defender. Bayern coughed up €55 million to sign Nathaniel Brown from VfB Stuttgart.
The Bundesliga champions wanted a left-back since Raphael Guerreiro left the club on a free transfer. However, they were not expected to splurge such a big fee to sign a full-back. Max Eberl has consistently insisted that Brown’s versatility made him an attractive signing for Bayern.
Brown was excellent for Stuttgart last season. Considering the significant fee Bayern have paid for him, he is expected to start the season in the starting XI. The arrival of Brown does raise the question marks over the long-term future of Alphonso Davies.
The Canadian full-back has endured a difficult last 12 months due to different injuries. He has failed to regain full fitness. A few reports in Germany suggested Bayern would consider big offers for Davies, but they are not actively pushing for his exit. Eberl also confirmed that Davies will be at Bayern next season while talking to the media on Wednesday.
According to Sport1, Bayern chiefs are hoping that Brown’s arrival will also push Davies to rediscover his best form. The Bavarian club believes Davies will respond well to the signing of Brown. Davies is also reportedly keen on staying at Bayern instead of looking for a move away from Munich.
Davies and Brown can coexist in the starting XI, as they can also play in the wide position higher up the pitch. Brown can also slot in the midfield position. The versatility of both players will ensure they get a considerable amount of game time next season. However, the most consistent player is likely to play regularly in the left-back position.
Davies doubtful for pre-season tour of Asia
Bayern fans will hope Davies’ injury problems are behind him. He didn’t feature in the World Cup for Canada due to an injury he picked up at the end of last season. The Canadian reported early at Sabner Strasse to complete recovery from this injury.
Davies was spotted in training with the team this week, but he is not completely fit yet. The 25-year-old left-back didn’t play against FC Rottach-Egern on Thursday. A final decision on his participation in the pre-season tour of Asia will be made in the coming days. Bayern want to ensure he is completely fit for the start of the season.
