After a terrible 2023/24 campaign, Bayern Munich bounced back this season with a Bundesliga title. They marginally fell short in the DFB Pokal and Champions League, but Vincent Kompany has done a great job since arriving last summer.

Bayern chiefs are now looking to strengthen the squad as they look to compete on all fronts next season. Along with bringing new players to the club, Die Roten are also looking to sort out the future of several senior squad members.

The Bavarian club has already handed big bumper contracts to Joshua Kimmich, Alphonso Davies, and Jamal Musiala. Bayern are now targeting to secure the future of their defensive lynchpin Dayot Upamecano. The French defender has 12 months left on his current deal.

Upamecano is eager to stay in Munich, but talks had reportedly reached an impasse due to wage demands. However, Sky Sports has reported this week that fresh contract talks have started between both parties. The talks between the two clubs are circling around a deal until 2030.

Max Eberl confirms talks with Upamecano

While talking to the media on Friday, Max Eberl also confirmed a new round of talks with Dayot Upamecano. The German suggested that talks have been positive with the French defender. The next few weeks will give more clarity on the long-term future of Upamecano at Bayern.

Upamecano has been Bayern’s best center-back this season. He has played a crucial role under Vincent Kompany. The Frenchman looked certain to leave Munich last summer when he fell down the pecking order in central defense under Thomas Tuchel. However, Kompany has managed to get the best out of him this season.

Bayern have already lost Eric Dier on a free transfer. The English defender completed a move to Monaco earlier this week. They are keen on keeping Upamecano since he is one of the key players for Kompany.

The central defense is an area to address for Bayern in the summer, even if Upamecano ends up signing a new deal. The Bavarian club is in talks to sign Jonathan Tah from Bayer Leverkusen on a free transfer to replace Dier. Meanwhile, Bayern are open to listening to offers for Kim Min-jae. The South Korean defender has struggled for consistency since arriving from Napoli in 2023. The next few weeks will give more clarity on whether Bayern will have to sign another central defender in addition to Tah. They had a concrete interest in Bournemouth center-back Dean Huijsen, but he is set to join Real Madrid.
