Unbelievably stupid. Or in German, überbold. This is how Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany described Michael Olise's red card against Viking on Tuesday. He saw his French Ballon d’Or candidate lose his self-control when he threw the ball toward Zlatko Tripić’s face.
Speaking to Prime Video after the game (via Goal), Vincent Kompany admitted that Olise needs to do better at managing his temper in the game against Viking. The red card completely changed the game for the visitors.
"That red card was unbelievably stupid. We’ve discussed that very clearly. Michael should have a better temper. And he knows that. You could tell he felt embarrassed toward the team. Today it was not a final or a semifinal. But these kinds of moments are crucial in a season."Vincent Kompany
The Belgian coach has backed Olise to come back stronger from this experience. The French forward will hope not to repeat the same mistake in the latter stages of the competition. Bayern cannot afford to lose him for several games. He will miss next week's game against Arsenal in the Champions League due to suspension.
Harry Kane has also told Prime Video that the red card changed the game for Die Roten. The English forward insisted that Olise will learn from this mistake. He believes that the French forward will be frustrated to miss next week's big game against Arsenal.
Bayern fans and Olise will look to forget game against Viking as soon as possible
Let’s also stick to the facts here. Yesterday’s red card for Olise was his first in his senior career. To find previous incidents involving his side, you have to dig deep. For example, in 2021, he was frustrated with his Reading coach, Veljko Paunović.
The French winger lost the ball against Bristol City, was substituted, and reacted in an unprofessional manner. In the second round of the last World Cup, Olise received a yellow card following a confrontation with Matías Galarza. Footage showed that Olise did not overstep the mark.
These are minor incidents in an otherwise spotless career, especially when it comes to cards and other frustrating moments. Olise was praised by everyone and everything for his class and elegance. Why judge him at his worst now after one incident?
It certainly cost Bayern the three points. But Olise has been this good and this crucial for the team that it should not be such a big deal. Even sports director Max Eberl was asked for a comment, and he stated that ‘Viking got what they wanted’ and ‘Bayern let themselves be provoked’. He is even considering a fine for the Frenchman.
Let’s forget about this incident as soon as possible. It will overshadow the pure class of what is probably Bayern’s current best player.
And everyone loses their temper now and then.
