The biggest game of matchday six of the Bundesliga is between Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig. It is going to be an exciting encounter as RB Leipzig are in good shape, while Bayern are looking to get back to winning ways after dropping points against Augsburg last weekend.
It is a special game for Martin Demichelis. After spending time at Bayern as a player and youth coach, Demichelis will be leading RB Leipzig at the Allianz Arena on Saturday.
In an interview with Bayern’s media team, the Argentine admitted that he is excited about returning to Allianz Arena. He is looking forward to meeting familiar faces.
Even though Bayern holds a special place in his heart, Demichelis is eager to see RB Leipzig come out on top when the two sides meet on Saturday.
Demichellis coaching career has been impressive until now
Demichelis, who played 51 matches for Argentina, says his ‘ongoing dream’ was ‘always’ to be a head coach in the Bundesliga.
"It was always my dream to be a coach in the Bundesliga. I am very proud that I am now able to fulfil this dream at a top club like RB Leipzig."Martín Demichelis, RB Leipzig head coach
Let’s take a brief look back at ‘Micho’s’ training career so far. After playing for the club from 2003 to 2011, he returned as a coach in 2019. He began training the U19 team and later the Bayern reserves. Bayern did not extend his contract after three impressive years.
For example, in the 59 matches Demichelis coached at Bayern II, he recorded 34 wins, 15 draws, and just 10 losses. He scored 113 goals in the 2021/22 season, an exceptional record. He worked with young talents like Malik Tilman and Armindo Sieb.
The Argentine returned to River Plate in Argentina in the summer of 2022. He won the title in his only season as coach at River Plate. Before returning to Germany, he coached Monterrey in Mexico and Mallorca in Spain.
The Argentinians had a tough start at Leipzig. The pressure was at stake before the matches against Frankfurt and PSV Eindhoven. But they succeeded with two solid wins (6-0 and 1-0). Although the Champions League encounter with the Dutch top team was not that convincing. The Leipzig fans have high expectations for the rest of the season.
Should Bayern have kept Demichelis in some capacity?
Of course, in 2022, you couldn't say Demichelis was ready to join the staff of one of the world's biggest clubs in the world. But maybe Bayern should have given the ‘Micho role' more consideration.
Bayern will always be in his football DNA. But the question is whether he will automatically return to Munich when offered. Whether in an assistant role, or as head coach.
Maybe the club played their hand a little bit.
