Anyone who watched Bayern Munich play against Arsenal on Wednesday would probably rank Alphonso Davies among the best players on the pitch. Coach Vincent Kompany deployed Davies on the left as an adventurous winger, with Josip Stanišić operating alongside him.

Davies once again showed that he can operate anywhere on the left flank. He scored the equaliser after a marvellous through ball from Kane. With 17 goals in 259 appearances for Bayern, Davies can be considered one of the world’s finest left-sided players, whether as a winger, a wing-back, or a full-back.

Manchester United lead race for Balde as Spanish outlet links Flick with Davies

Several top clubs have already tried to prise Davies away from Bayern Munich, including Manchester United, Liverpool and PSG. Real Madrid showed some of the strongest interest in 2024 and 2025. Los Blancos hoped to sign Davies on a free transfer, but he instead chose to extend his contract in Munich.

Now Real Madrid’s arch-rivals have entered the picture. FC Barcelona are believed to be interested, but only if Spaniard Alejandro Balde leaves Camp Nou. Manchester United showed concrete interest last summer and, according to ESPN, the Red Devils want to explore fresh negotiations in the January transfer window.

If that happens, Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick already has a clear replacement in mind. According to the well-informed El Nacional, he wants to reunite with Alphonso Davies. It was Flick who truly established Davies in Bayern’s first team.

Do Bayern already have a credible replacement for Davies?

To reiterate, this scenario is only likely to develop if Balde actually leaves FC Barcelona. Reports suggest Manchester United are currently the only club with concrete interest. But would Balde realistically move to Michael Carrick’s struggling side?

The picture may change in light of recent reports claiming that Bayern officials want to sell Davies. Vincent Kompany, however, is clearly reluctant to lose one of his key players, who contributes both in attack and defence.

It is easy to understand the head coach’s position. Davies is one of Europe’s most talented left-sided players and should not be sold, even for a substantial fee. Yet his current market value of €42 million and his wages would make any Barcelona deal difficult to complete.

Besides, what are Bayern’s realistic alternatives at present? Croatia international Josip Stanišić is not as versatile as Davies, while the club’s youth prospects are not yet ready to replace the Canadian.

Barcelona would have to make Bayern an offer they simply cannot refuse.
