From Winger to Advanced Playmaker
Serge Gnabry has had by far his most unproductive season after debuting in Bayern's color in 2018. The German international only managed to rack up seven goals and eight assists in all competitions this campaign. Only his numbers last year were worse, but he only played in half the number of games compared to this year.
Gnabry had a fine start to the season but could not keep up the momentum while also being sidelined due to complications with his knees. A long history of injuries also hampered his speed and acceleration which helped him excel as a winger. At some point, he was the prime candidate to be on the chopping block. Thankfully, he managed to find his groove at the end of the season with the breaking moment being the solo goal in Der Klassiker. This game also marked a monumental tactical change from Vincent Kompany on Gnabry when the Belgian coach began to utilize the 29-year-old as a central attacking midfielder.
In the next Bundesliga fixture against Heidenheim, Gnabry started as an attacking midfielder alongside Kingsley Coman and Michael Olise on the wings. He was outstanding with his passing, and even had an assist to his name with a beautiful through ball finding Konrad Laimer on the counterattack. He finished the game with three key passes and two big chances created.
Serge Gnabry once again filled in the number 10 role in the season finale against Hoffenheim. This time, the German showed his finishing skills with a clinical left-foot strike from the edge of the box into the bottom corner.
A positional tweak from Kompany has helped "The Chef" turn his season around and brought the club positive results after positive results.
