Bayern Munich eye Premier League goalkeeper as 'top' backup option for Manuel Neuer
Bayern Munich chiefs, as reported by SportBild’s Christian Falk and Tobi Altschäffl on the FCBayernInsider Podcast, have decided to extend Manuel Neuer’s contract until 2026. The 38-year-old’s start to the season has been a mix of impressive clean sheets and a few costly errors, which has raised many eyebrows and sparked questions about his future at the club.
Despite inconsistency in performances, Neuer continues to enjoy the full confidence of Bayern and is therefore set to receive a new contract proposal.
Meanwhile, there have been internal discussions about signing another top goalkeeper alongside Neuer. The club is reportedly exploring several options to bolster the goalkeeping position ahead of next season.
Brighton goalkeeper on Bayern’s radar, Nübel remains an option
Brighton Hove Albion's goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen has been on Bayern’s radar for a long time. The 22-year-old has been consistently performing at a high level in the Premier League and has already secured his spot as the number 1 keeper in the Dutch National Team. Due to his young age, Bayern might be planning to eventually make him the club’s long-term future goalkeeper after spending a year under Manuel Neuer.
Alexander Nübel, currently on loan at Stuttgart, remains a potential option for the goalkeeping spot at Bayern Munich. However, the goalkeeper has stated on multiple occasions that he does not see himself as a backup to Neuer, which could create complications if Bayern were to recall him while the veteran is still at the club. Earlier this year, Bayern and Nübel agreed to a long-term contract that will keep him in Munich until 2029, signaling the club's clear intentions to include him in their future plans.
Daniel Peretz likely to be loaned out
The plan for Daniel Peretz is to be loaned out in order to get regular playing time and experience. According to Florian Plettenberg, the 24-year-old has attracted interest from several European clubs including Union Berlin, Anderlecht, Copenhagen, and Brøndby. There have been no contract talks yet, but if Bayern extend with Neuer and sign another top goalkeeper next summer, then the most realistic option for Peretz will be to move out on loan and continue his development.
The Israeli goalkeeper joined Bayern in August 2023 and since then has struggled to make appearances for the senior team. With Neuer sidelined due to a rib injury, Peretz recently got his first start of the season against FC Heidenheim, which ended in a comfortable victory for Die Roten.
Like Neuer, Sven Ulreich's contract also expires in 2025. If he were to sign a contract extension, the 36-year-old would be demoted to third-choice goalkeeper behind Neuer and the new keeper Bayern brings in.
