Bayern Munich were expected to strengthen the attack this summer. They had identified Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon as the prime target, but the English forward eventually joined FC Barcelona. Bayern moved swiftly to complete a deal for PSV Eindhoven’s Ismael Saibari from PSV Eindhoven. The Moroccan forward is expected to complete a move to Bayern in the next few days.
Saibari is expected to be the only forward signing for Die Roten unless there is an unexpected departure. Before signing Saibari, Bayern had explored other options in the transfer market, which included Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford.
According to Fabrizio Romano (via iMiaSanMia), Bayern explored the conditions and had contacts to understand the situation of Rashford. However, they ended up pivoting towards a move for Saibari. As things stand, Bayern have not made any bid for Rashford.
The 28-year-old forward spent last season on loan at FC Barcelona. Rashford had a productive loan spell in Spain, scoring 14 goals and providing 10 assists across all competitions. He helped Barcelona retain the La Liga title. The England international was keen on staying at Barcelona, but the Spanish club has not taken the option to sign him permanently for €30 million. They ended up signing Gordon to strengthen the attack.
As things stand, Rashford is expected to return to Manchester United after playing for England at the World Cup. The Premier League side is open to listening to offers for him, but there are no active negotiations taking place for a permanent transfer.
Rashford will be an expensive transfer for Bayern
There is no doubt Rashford would have added a new dimension to Bayern’s attack. His pace and trickery on the left flank can give Vincent Kompany another strong option in the attack.
However, a move for Rashford would have dented Bayern’s wage bill. The transfer fee to sign Rashford is reasonable, but he is currently one of the top earners at Manchester United. His wages are expected to be a stumbling block for all suitors this summer unless the English club once again opens the door for a loan move.
After signing Saibari, Bayern will look to wrap up the deal to sign Nathaniel Brown from Eintracht Frankfurt. The German left-back has already agreed personal terms with Die Roten. The Bundesliga champions are expected to play the waiting game for further transfers as they will need departures to make space for new signings.
