After a disappointing defeat against Augsburg on Saturday, Bayern Munich got back to winning ways against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League. Die Roten had to dig deep to get the win in Eindhoven as Harry Kane’s late goal helped them to clinch a 2-1 victory. Courtesy of the win on Wednesday, Bayern ensured they finished second in the Champions League points table. They have qualified straightaway for the round of 16 of the competition.
Vincent Kompany made several changes to the starting XI on Wednesday as Jamal Musiala got his first start of the season. Tom Bischof was deployed in the right-back position, while Nicolas Jackson led the attack instead of Kane. Dayot Upamecano also returned to the starting XI after missing the last two games due to illness.
The hosts started the game on the front foot, putting pressure on Bayern. The early exchanges saw PSV create some half-chances, but the first big chance came through Tom Bischof. The young German midfielder hit the frame of the goal with a smashing hit from his left foot.
PSV had done a terrific job in the first half when it came to troubling Bayern in the final third. They went for the jugular, but couldn’t convert their chances in the first half largely due to brave defending from Bayern and great shot-stopping from Jonas Urbig. The visitors also had their half-chances, but the first half was largely dominated by the Dutch club.
Goals arrive in the second half.
After a challenging first half, Bayern managed to open the scoring early in the second half. Bischof won the ball around Bayern’s box and played a precise pass to put Lennart Karl through on the right flank. The youngster played linked with Musiala in the box before the latter pulled the trigger and found the back of the net with a thunderous strike. There was a sense of relief on Musiala’s face as it was his first goal for Bayern after a long injury lay-off.
Die Roten had been on the receiving end before Musiala’s goal. The visitors wrestled back control with the goal and started putting more pressure on PSV. Vincent Kompany brought on the likes of Serge Gnabry, Harry Kane, and Michael Olise to add more impetus to the attack after the hour mark.
PSV managed to get back in the game against the run of play with a screamer from Ismael Saibari. After a quick give-and-go with Guus Til, Saibari unleashed a rocket from the edge of the box to level the scoring. It was well deserved goal for PSV, considering how well they had performed for the majority of the game.
The hosts couldn’t hold on to a 1-1 scoreline for long as Kane found the back of the net in the 84th minute after a well-worked move started by Jonas Urbig. The young goalkeeper found the run of Luis Diaz on the left flank. The Colombian found the run of Kane around the edge of the box with a perfectly weighted pass. The English forward hammered the ball straightaway into the net.
Bayern had the chance to score the third few minutes later as Kane’s shot from a tight angle was saved by the goalkeeper. PSV were reduced to ten men in added time when Mauro Junior received a second yellow for a late challenge on Kane.
Courtesy of defeat on Wednesday, PSV were knocked out of the Champions League. It was far from perfect for Bayern in Eindhoven, but it was a crucial win to finish second in the points table.
