Bayern Munich players managed to lift themselves after a disappointing Champions League exit to Paris Saint-Germain with a narrow 1-0 win over Wolfsburg on Saturday. Following a win on matchday 34 of the Bundesliga, Bayern extended their unbeaten run to 14 league games.
Vincent Kompany made several changes to the starting XI that played against PSG on Wednesday. Harry Kane and Nicolas Jackson started together to lead the attack, while Jamal Musiala played on the left flank. Tom Bischof also got a start, but in the left-back position.
The hosts started the game strongly as Bayern players looked jaded from Wednesday’s defeat against PSG. Wolfsburg created a couple of decent chances, but Bayern defended well and helped Jonas Urbig keep the ball from going into the net.
Die Roten’s first big opportunity came in the 19th minute. Bischof curled the ball from 25 yards to hit the woodwork. The young German midfielder did the hard work, but was unlucky not to open the scoring for Bayern. Bischof made an impact at the other end of the pitch a few minutes later as he made a last-ditch block to deny Christian Eriksen from giving the hosts a lead in the game.
Bayern had a golden opportunity to open the scoring in the 34th minute as Michael Olise was brought down in the box. Harry Kane uncharacteristically blew the chance away by failing to convert from the spot. To be fair, it would have been harsh on Wolfsburg to go behind after delivering a good performance in the first 30 minutes.
The two sides created half-chances for the rest of the first half, but couldn’t find a way to open the scoring.
Olise magic once again rescues Bayern Munich
The second half started the way the first one ended, both teams lacking the decisive touch in the final third to get the lead. However, Michael Olise stepped up in the 56th minute to give Bayern lead with a beautiful curling effort from the edge of the mark. It was a trademark Olise goal which he has scored for Bayern on several occasions.
The visitors controlled the game once they went ahead. Wolfsburg were struggling to create chances. Die Roten didn’t look at their scintillating best in the attack, but they were recycling the possession to preserve the lead.
Wolfsburg had an opportunity at the end of the game when Mattias Svanberg had nothing but Jonas Urbig to beat for the goal. The Swede managed to curl the ball past the goalkeeper only to hit the post. This was the only moment in the second half when Bayern gave Wolfsburg a big chance to get on the scoresheet.
It was not the prettiest win for Bayern, but they had to bounce back from Champions League disappointment as there is a DFB Pokal final to play later this month.
