Bayern Munich returned to action after a dreaded three-week international break, facing Augsburg in the Bundesliga. A win on the road would have guaranteed Bayern a spot at the top of the points table after arch-rivals Borussia Dortmund dropped points in the early Friday night match against Werder Bremen.
However, it was not the start anyone hoped for when a silly mistake from Manuel Neuer handed Robin Fellhauer a goal on a plate just eight seconds after the whistle. The veteran goalkeeper was on the wrong side of history this time, as Fellhauer etched his name in the Bundesliga record book as the fastest goalscorer ever.
Stunned by the early goal, Bayern pushed the tempo, trying to find a quick equaliser, but Harry Kane and Alphonso Davies both skied the ball over in agony. The poor condition of the pitch in Augsburg made it even harder for Bayern to dictate the tempo.
Bayern's biggest chance came in the very last play of the first half when Aleksandar Pavlovic's cross found Harry Kane, but the Englishman's shot hit the crossbar. This was just the beginning of an unlucky sequence for Bayern Munich.
Goal fest in second half, but Bayern had to share points
Early in the second half, Luis Diaz pulled out a wondrous bicycle kick from Ismael Saibari's cross, slipping past Finn Dahmen's hands and into the net. Unfortunately, the candidate for goal of the season was denied by the VAR after the referee judged Josip Stanisic to be in an offside position on the previous play.
Bayern did not have to wait long after that, as Kane found a running Saibari, who tucked the ball into the bottom corner for the leveller. The high of scoring the equaliser did not last long, as Rodrigo Ribeiro put Augsburg back on top for the second time off a rebound.
Vincent Kompany needed a change, and he brought on Serge Gnabry and Nathaniel Brown.
With the new players on the pitch, Bayern sustained intense pressure on the Augsburg defense.
However, luck continued to look the other way as Gnabry and Diaz were denied a goal after the passers were offside. It was not until the 80th minute that Kane played the role of the facilitator for the second time, setting up Brown for an easy tap-in.
Bayern's continuous efforts in the dying minutes did not pay off, as Gnabry was rejected by the post before the linesman ruined another celebration with the offside flag for the fourth time today.
Vincent Kompany and the boys walked away with one point, feeling they deserved more, with four goals overturned by VAR. Bayern's second draw of the season put them on 11 points, second on the table, two points behind Dortmund and one more than Bayer Leverkusen and Freiburg.
