Matchday five of the Bundesliga was straightforward for Bayern Munich. They hosted a struggling Werder Bremen on Friday evening. Vincent Kompany’s men compounded the problems of visitors by thoroughly dominating the game and clinching a comfortable 4-0 victory.
Kompany was forced to make a crucial change in the midfield for the clash against Werder Bremen. Joshua Kimmich was under the weather this week, which ensured that he couldn’t play the entire game. Kompany rested him and gave Tom Bischof his first Bundesliga start for Bayern alongside Leon Goretzka in the center of the park.
The defending champions started the game on the front foot and dominated possession. Harry Kane had the first big opportunity to open the scoring in the fifth minute, but Karl Hein stood tall to deny the English striker.
Die Roten gave Werder Bremen no breathing space in the first 20 minutes, largely camped in their half, but couldn’t find the breakthrough. The host were rewarded for their hard work in the 22nd minute through an unlikely source. While recycling the possession from a set-piece, Michael Olise delivered a wicked cross in the box. Jonathan Tah showed great awareness to flick it in the direction of the goal and opened his account for Bayern.
The floodgates opened once Bayern went ahead. They were putting more pressure on Werder Bremen by creating chances at a consistent rate. Kane was denied by Hein at one instance, while Marco Freidl made an important block at another instance to stop the English forward from getting on the score sheet.
Kane’s persistence paid off as he won a penalty kick just before the halftime whistle. Unfortunately, Freidl brought him down in the box. The former Spurs strikers converted from the spot to double Die Roten’s lead going into the half-time break.
Bayern managed the game to perfection in second half
The hosts ensured that Bremen had no chance to come back in the game by tripling the lead just after the hour mark. A swift move and great pass from Luis Dias allowed Kane to score his second goal of the game and seal the three points for Die Roten.
Vincent Kompany made several changes after the third goal to ensure his players get rest before Tuesday’s Champions League clash. Kimmich came off the bench to get some minutes under his belt. Die Roten managed to limit Bremen to just three shots on target. Manuel Neuer was hardly tested throughout the game, highlighting Die Roten’s dominance.
Konrad Laimer added the icing on the cake with a fourth goal in the 87th minute of the game. Bischof found the overlapping run of Laimer from the left-back position. The Austrian hammered the ball past Hein from an acute angle to make it 4-0 for the hosts.
Courtesy of the win on Friday, Bayern went five points clear at the top of the table. Kompany’s men will switch their attention to Champions League football as they travel to Cyprus on Tuesday to face Pafos FC.
