Bayern Munich have significant work to do in the outfield positions of the squad when the transfer window opens in the summer. The goalkeeping department is one area where Bayern have settled options, but it all hinges on Manuel Neuer’s decision to play for one more season.
The experienced German goalkeeper turned 40 on Friday. His current deal expires at the end of the season. Die Roten are content with his performances this season. They are open to offering him another one-year contract, but with a reduced salary.
Neuer has been calm about his future since the start of 2026. The 40-year-old shot-stopper insisted that a decision will be made in April, near the business end of the season. There have been reports in Germany suggesting that Bayern chiefs are expecting Neuer to announce his retirement.
Bayern are preparing for all scenarios in the summer. In the event of Neuer retiring from football, Die Roten will promote Jonas Urbig as the number one in the squad. The Bavarian club will dip into the transfer market to sign a deputy for Urbig.
According to Bild, Bayern are considering a move for Hoffenheim goalkeeper Oliver Baumann. The 35-year-old goalkeeper has delivered impressive performances for Hoffenheim, which has helped him to become the number one for Germany in the absence of Marc-André ter Stegen.
The German international has a contract until 2028 at Hoffenheim. There is an option in his contract to extend it until 2029. Considering his age, Baumann will not be an expensive signing for Die Roten.
Will Baumann be content with number two at Bayern?
Baumann certainly has the quality and time on his side to play for Germany in the World Cup 2026 and Euros 2028. In order to be in a shout to be part of the German national team, Baumann will have to play regularly at the club level.
By joining Bayern, Baumann will not play every week as Urbig will be the first-choice option. However, playing for Die Roten is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The 35-year-old will get an opportunity to compete for trophies. It will all depend on what Baumann wants to prioritize at this stage of his career.
Die Roten will not make a move for Baumann until they get clarity from Manuel Neuer. The next few weeks should give clarity on who will be starting in the goal for Bayern next season.
