Bayern Munich are expected to strengthen the defense in the summer transfer window. The plans for summer will largely depend on what happens with the futures of Dayot Upamecano and Kim Min-jae.
Die Roten had identified Marc Guehi as a potential option to strengthen the defense in the summer since his contract at Crystal Palace was set to expire at the end of the season. Bayern chiefs held talks with the English defender, but Manchester City made their move in January and completed the signing last week.
Bayern will have to look at other center-back options to strengthen the defense. It does look like they have identified a young central defender from Ligue 1 to add more quality to their squad.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Bayern Munich have concrete interest in Rennes defender Jérémy Jacquet. Chelsea and Liverpool are also showing concrete interest in the young French center-back. The Italian transfer journalist has reported that all three clubs are looking to agree a deal for the summer during the winter transfer window.
As per reports in France and England, Chelsea have already held talks with Rennes regarding a deal for Jérémy Jacquet.
Jacquet has consistently featured for Rennes this season. He has made 17 appearances for the Ligue 1 side, racking up game time of 1514 minutes. The 20-year-old defender is highly rated in France due to his composure in duels and ability to read the game.
Rennes doesn’t want to lose Jacquet during the winter transfer window. He has a contract until 2029, which gives Rennes the leverage to keep him until summer and ask for a big fee.
Bayern need a departure to make space for Jacquet
The record Bundesliga champions will need a significant departure, more specifically that of Kim Min-jae, to bring in a player like Jacquet. Provided Dayot Upamecano stays in Munich next summer, the new center-back signing will be the third choice behind the former RB Leipzig defender and Jonathan Tah.
Apart from natural center-backs, Bayern also has players like Hiroki Ito and Josip Stanisic, who can play in the heart of defense. Both players have previously delivered solid performances in the heart of the defense.
Jacquet is doing well by playing every weekend for Rennes. A move away from Ligue 1 may not guarantee him regular playing time next season. However, he will certainly have a strong pathway at Bayern to eventually become a key player in the first team.
