Bayern Munich ended a productive week with a comfortable 3-0 win against Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga. The Bavarian club didn’t have to break a sweat to clinch this win in order to restore their lead of six points at the top of the points table.
Vincent Kompany made a few changes to the starting XI that featured against RB Leipzig on Wednesday. Lennart Karl returned to the team, replacing suspended Michael Olise on the right flank. Leon Goretzka also got a start in the center of the midfield, while Alphonso Davies started on the bench, allowing Josip Stanisic to play in the left-back position.
It was a quiet start to the game as Bayern were dominating possession, but didn’t have the impetus in the final third. Meanwhile, the hosts had to drop deep and give Die Roten minimal space in the final third.
The breakthrough for Bayern eventually came through a bit of brilliance from Lennart Karl in the final third. The youngster went past defenders with ease and was eventually brought down in the box. After an intervention from VAR, the referee awarded a penalty to Bayern. Harry Kane stepped up and made no mistake in converting from the spot.
The English forward took less than three minutes to double Bayern’s lead. After getting the ball outside the box, Kane checked all possibilities before unleashing a shot in the bottom right-hand corner to score his second goal of the afternoon.
Werder Bremen had a chance to get back in the game five minutes before the half-time whistle. Felix Agu missed the target with a curling attempt from the left flank. The shot missed the target by a whisker.
Bayern manage to see out resurgent Werder side in the second half
Bayern were forced to make a change as Neuer came off due to injury and was replaced by Jonas Urbig. The hosts started the second half with a bang as they hit the post through a header from Marc Grull. Agu was once again causing problems for Bayern on the left flank as he delivered a dangerous cross to find Grull in the box.
Bayern came close to scoring the third goal just after the hour mark. Gnabry was played through a brilliant pass by Kane. The German winger couldn’t beat the goalkeeper, a big opportunity to put the game beyond the hosts.
Werder Bremen created a couple more half-chances before Die Roten delivered the hammer blow in the 70th minute. Alphonso Davies found Leon Goretzka at the edge of the box after a neat bit of wing play on the left flank. The German midfielder hammered the ball into the bottom left corner to seal the three points for Bayern.
Vincent Kompany will be pleased with the way his team has responded in the last seven days after two setbacks in the Bundesliga. The Belgian coach will hope performances continue to improve over the next few games before Die Roten play in the latter stages of the cup competitions.
