Bayern Munich had a messy summer transfer window as they failed in their pursuits of several attacking players. However, they managed to get the signing of Luis Diaz spot on as the Colombian has made an immediate impact. The likes of Tom Bischof and Jonathan Tah have also delivered impressive performances, while Nicolas Jackson has been a hit-and-miss until now.
The Bavarian club was heavily criticised for leaving a smaller squad for Vincent Kompany. They parted ways with several senior players but didn’t adequately replace them. Despite the mess of a summer transfer window, Kompany has managed to get positive results this season.
Bayern chiefs probably feel vindicated for sticking with their attacking options, as Lennart Karl has had more opportunities. Diaz has also made an impact, while Jackson is a loan signing, giving them an opportunity to strengthen the attacking department in the future.
The Bavarian club is content with the squad at Kompany’s disposal and has no plans to strengthen in January. While talking to Sky Sports in Germany (via iMiaSanMia), Bayern’s sporting director Christoph Freund ruled out signings during the winter transfer window.
"We've learned in football to never rule anything out completely, but it's not planned because we're well-equipped."Christoph Freund
Freund believes that Jamal Musiala, Hiroki Ito, and Alphonso Davies will be like new signings in the second half of the season. All three players have been sidelined due to serious injuries. Ito returned against Freiburg last weekend, while Davies is expected to play before the winter break. Jamal Musiala is progressing well in his recovery, and he will likely return at some point in Ruckrunde.
Die Roten will also consider extending Dayot Upamecano's contract as an important piece of business in the winter. The French defender has seven months left on his contract. Considering his form over the last 18 months, Bayern have to secure his future sooner rather than later.
Bayern expected to spend big in the summer
The defending Bundesliga champions had a positive net spend last summer. They had also trimmed their wage bill by parting ways with the likes of Thomas Müller and Leroy Sane on a free transfer.
Considering the amount of money Bayern saved last summer, they will certainly have ambitious plans for the summer. They will certainly strengthen the central defense amidst uncertainty around the future of Upamecano and Kim Min-jae. The Bavarian club has also been linked with several young midfielders, full-backs, and forwards over the last few months, which suggests at least one key signing will happen in each position.
