The Club World Cup campaign came to an end for Bayern Munich on Saturday as they succumbed to a 2-0 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain in Atlanta. The European Champions will face Real Madrid in the semi-final, while Bayern return to Munich on Sunday.

Vincent Kompany went with his strongest starting XI for the game against PSG. Musiala made his first start since April. The German star slotted behind Harry Kane, while Kompany preferred a midfield pairing of Joshua Kimmich and Aleksandar Pavlovic against the European Champions.

The Bundesliga champions started the game strongly, with Michael Olise getting the first chance to open the scoring in the sixth minute. The French winger had a shot from outside the box that was saved brilliantly by Gianluigi Donnarumma. The shot from Olise needed more power to put Bayern ahead.

Both teams were pressing well and causing problems for the defenders. Olise once again came close in the 27th minute, but Donnarumma once again denied him with a good save. Bayern were the better side in the first 30 minutes as PSG didn’t create significant chances.

Bayern eventually had the ball in the net at the end of half-time through Dayot Upamecano, but the Frenchman was caught offside by Paris Saint-Germain’s backline.

The first half ended in the worst possible way as Jamal Musiala suffered a horrific injury after trying to win the ball from Donnarumma. The German star was distraught as he was stretchered off the pitch. It does look like he will miss a significant chunk of next season due to this injury.

The Bavarian club was the better side in the first half, but they didn’t have goals to show for it. Die Roten also lost Josip Stanisic to injury in the first half. Kompany and Die Roten will hope that the Croatian defender hasn’t suffered a serious injury.

Second half turned out to be nightmare for Bayern

The second half started fairly well for Die Roten. Both teams had decent opportunities in the early exchanges of the second half. However, PSG grew into the game and started dominating the proceedings.

The European champions got the breakthrough in the 78th minute. Desire Doue, the hero of the UCL final, opened the scoring for PSG. After Harry Kane lost the ball at the halfway line, João Neves drove with the ball ahead. The Portuguese midfielder squared the ball to Doue at the edge of the box. The French winger unleashed a furious shot to beat Neuer.

Bayern got a chance to get back in the game as PSG were reduced to ten men in the 83rd minute when William Pacho made a dangerous studs-up tackle on Leon Goretzka.

The French side was later reduced to nine men when former Bayern defender Lucas Hernandez was sent off for a foul on Raphael Guerreiro. Despite having the advantage of two extra players, Die Roten couldn’t muster big chances in the last ten minutes. Harry Kane had the ball in the net, but he was marginally offside in the buildup.

PSG eventually settled the game by scoring the second goal in the added time. With a great piece of skill, Achraf Hakimi managed to beat three players and lay off the ball for Ousmane Dembele in the box. The French winger hammered the ball past Neuer to seal PSG’s spot in the semi-final.

Bayern got a penalty just before the final whistle, but it was later overturned by VAR. A disappointing end to the tournament for the Bavarian club.
