Despite a record-shattering form in all competitions, Bayern Munich's board is still seeking changes at the top.
According to AZ's Maximillian Koch, upper management remains highly critical of Bayern's Director of Sports, Max Eberl, although he has contributed massively to the team regaining its European elite status.
Eberl is accused of "spending too much money" on contract extensions and signing fees. Seems like the club is not happy to see players and agents sucking out the cash from Bayern Munich's bank account.
In his tenure, Eberl is responsible for the extensions of Alphonso Davies, Jamal Musiala, Dayot Upamecano and, more recently, Serge Gnabry. He also brought in top wingers Michael Olise and Luis Diaz, both of whom are key contributors to the team's success.
The sign-on fees and salary agreements of all these contracts are quite hefty, which can go against Eberl's defence in front of the powerful figures. But without hefty paydays, would these players agree to come or stay in Munich? After all, they are easily in the top three in their respective position this year, and many top clubs are already eyeing their services if Bayern lets them slip away.
Lack of trust between Eberl and supervisory board
Another point of criticism revealed by AZ is that there is no genuine relationship of trust between Eberl and the supervisory board. He said Eberl sometimes failed to "engage with the board" and informed them too late.
The argument essentially reverted to money talk, as the board also believed that Eberl did not negotiate as hard as Rummenigge and Hoeness used to, which cost Bayern a lot of money.
Essentially, the top figures' accusation against the 52-year-old director is generally all about money and work cohesion.
Understandably, he should work according to the financial framework set by the supervisory board. The fact that Eberl tried to act outside of it or not collaborate with supervisory board members should never sit right with the management.
This information can come as quite a surprise for fans, as Eberl is rated quite highly, especially after being the frontman in obtaining the signatures of Vincent Kompany, Jonathan Tah, Luis Diaz and Michael Olise.
Moreover, some may argue that he cannot be blamed for big wages because wage inflation began before his years at the club.
Eberl's contract with Bayern runs until 2027, and there is significant uncertainty around his future. Unfortunately, signs point towards his departure in June next year. If he is relieved of his duties, CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen and sporting director Christoph Freund would take over his tasks. Both have a good chance of having their contracts extended.
