A lesson in practical football
Vincent Kompany and Luis Enrique are both coaches who prioritise high-intensity pressing structures and fast-paced counter-attacking football. However, the two legs showed why Luis Enrique is a multiple-time Champions League winner and is still a few tiers above Kompany.
The Spaniard did not stick to his usual philosophy when PSG obviously needed to protect the scoreline. He allowed Bayern to control the tempo while sticking all ten men inside his half, waiting for counter-attacking opportunities.
This is not an unattractive style of play, but practical football. And that is something a young head coach like Vincent Kompany needs to learn from.
Kompany is a brilliant mind. He created one of the best attacks in Bayern's history. But he also chose to ignore all the red flags in defence to protect his ultra-attacking philosophy. PSG ate that high line for breakfast, and he did not bother changing it for the second leg.
Bayern fans can be confident that this defeat will be an eye-opening lesson for Kompany, and he will come back stronger next year with a more refined tactic and a better, deeper squad.
