The next few months will see Bayern Munich work on several contract extensions for key players in the squad. Christoph Freund has already started talks with Alphonso Davies, while negotiations with Thomas Muller and Leroy Sane are set to commence in the coming weeks.
While negotiations with several outfield players are happening in the background, Die Roten has sorted the goalkeeping department for the next two years. Bayern released a statement on Tuesday to confirm one-year contract extensions for Manuel Neuer and Sven Ulreich.
Both players were set to become free agents in the summer. The new deals will see them stay at Bayern until 2025. Die Roten doesn’t have to worry about getting a new goalkeeper in the next summer transfer window.
Neuer had recently expressed his desire to play at the top level until 2025. After spending ten months on the sidelines due to a serious leg injury, Neuer has made a very good comeback. Since returning to action at the end of October, Manuel Neuer has gradually improved on the pitch.
The German international remains one of the best goalkeepers in the world despite entering the twilight of his career. Moreover, he is the captain of the team and a real leader in the dressing room. The new deal could very well be Neuer’s last at Bayern. He is still hungry for more success, so expect him to be at his absolute best in the next 18 months.
Meanwhile, Ulreich has been rewarded for his work in the absence of Neuer. He started in the goal for three months this season when Neuer was recovering from the leg injury. Ulreich has been a top professional and solid performer for Die Roten across two spells. He has a great relationship with Neuer, so it was a no-brainer to extend his contract.
Sven Ulreich is expected to retire at the end of his contract. He may reportedly get a different role at the club post-retirement. The German goalkeeper may not play often in the next 18 months, but he has a vital role to play in the training and dressing room.

The contract renewals of Ulreich and Neuer may see Daniel Peretz go out on loan in the summer. The 23-year-old goalkeeper is rated highly by Bayern, but he will need consistent playing time to eventually challenge for the number-one position in the squad. The future of Alexander Nubel is also likely to be away from Bavaria after the contract renewals of Ulreich and Neuer. He may look for a permanent transfer when he returns from the loan spell at VfB Stuttgart in the summer.
