Along with strengthening the squad in the winter transfer window, Bayern Munich also need to keep hold of their key young players. Christoph Freund has a lot of work to do in the coming months when it comes to extending the contracts of key players in the squad.

Alphonso Davies has been subject to a lot of speculation since the start of the season. The Canadian full-back is attracting concrete interest from Real Madrid, while one German report suggested that he is leaning towards a move to the Spanish capital. However, Die Roten have taken the first steps to make sure Davies stays in Munich.

According to Bild’s Tobian Altschaffl and Christian Falk, Bayern have reopened talks with the representatives of Davies for a contract extension. Davies’ agent Nedal Huoseh held talks with Freund. Rekordmeister are determined to keep hold of Davies beyond his current deal, which expires in 2025.

Hasan Salihamidzic had reportedly agreed terms of a new contract with Davies earlier this year. However, Salihamidzic’s sacking at the end of the season meant that new negotiations were needed to tie down the 23-year-old full-back.

Real Madrid have been consistently linked with Alphonso Davies in the past 12 months. They need a long-term left-back, and Davies ticks all the boxes for this position. It has been previously revealed by several reports that Davies’ agent has been in touch with Real Madrid, but he recently denied that Davies is close to joining the Spanish club.

Davies has been a consistent performer for Bayern since arriving from the Vancouver Whitecaps in 2019. He seamlessly transitioned from a wide player to a left-back. The 23-year-old defender is now one of the best full-backs in the world. It will be a disaster if Bayern lose him to Real Madrid for the peak years of his career.

Since talks between both parties have restarted, the Bavarian faithful will be hopeful that Davies will stay in Munich for several years. He can play at the top level at Bayern for the next decade. In an ideal scenario, Bayern reach an agreement over a new contract before the end of the season.

Apart from Davies, Bayern are also focussing on the contract extension of Leroy Sane. The Bavarian club is set to meet Sane’s representatives after the ongoing international break. Sane has been in sensational form this season, which has attracted interest from Liverpool. Sane’s contract at Bayern also expires in 2025.
