Bayern Munich show interest in Gladbach’s Manu Kone
The midfield department at Bayern Munich needs to be strengthened in the coming transfer window. Marcel Sabitzer and Ryan Gravenberch left the club in the summer, while Konrad Laimer arrived on a free transfer from RB Leipzig. Despite Laimer’s arrival, Die Roten currently have only three senior midfield options in the squad.
The Bavarian club tried to sign Joao Palhinha from Fulham on the deadline day, only for the move to collapse at the last moment. Die Roten remains interested in Palhinha, but he may not be the only signing that the club may make to strengthen midfield in the next two transfer windows.
According to Bild, Bayern have a genuine interest in Borussia Monchengladbach’s Manu Kone. The record Bundesliga champions have been in contact with the midfielder’s representatives. Since Kone’s contract is until 2025 with an option for a further year, he will not be an expensive midfield target for next summer.
Apart from Die Roten, Liverpool have also shown interest in the French midfielder. Bild also insists that Bayern remains interested in signing a holding midfielder, so the potential transfer of Kone will be an additional midfield signing.
Kone has been an impressive midfield player for Gladbach in the past 18 months. The 22-year-old primarily operates as a central midfielder. His key strengths are passing and dribbling past players in the center of the park. The French midfielder can also be deployed in the defensive midfield position.
In an ideal scenario, Bayern does need a younger midfielder since Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka have turned 28. They need more energy and freshness in the center of the park to enjoy sustained success in Germany and Europe. Kone ticks most of the boxes, so it will be a smart and sensible signing for Die Roten.
The idea of signing a young midfielder makes sense for Bayern, but the club’s recent track record of handling young midfielders is not promising. They struggled to integrate top talents like Marc Roca, Renato Sanches, and Ryan Gravenberch into the first team. Unless there is a proper plan to integrate a young midfielder into the squad, Kone may eventually follow the same path as the previous three young midfielders signed by Rekordmeister.

Apart from Kone, Bayern have also been linked with several young midfielders in the past few days. They are reportedly keeping a close eye on Schalke’s Assan Ouedraogo and Palmeiras midfielder Luis Guilherme. The Bavarian club also holds an interest in Valencia’s Javi Guerra.
