Bayern Munich: Mathys Tel rejected interest from other top clubs
Bayern Munich came back from behind to clinch victory against FC Copenhagen in matchday two of the Champions League. The Bavarian club scored late in the game to take all three points. Mathys Tel was once again the hero for the Bavarian faithful as he scored another crucial goal for Bayern after coming off the bench in the second half.
The French forward has been the go-to player for Tuchel and Bayern this season to make an impact from the bench. Tel has scored five goals across Bundesliga and Champions League in 146 minutes on the pitch. He is currently averaging a goal every 29.2 minutes for Die Roten this season. The French forward also scored against Preussen Munster in the first round of DFB Pokal.
Tel was heavily linked with a loan move away from Rekordmeister in the summer transfer window. Augsburg and Tottenham Hotspur showed interest in the youngster, but he was determined to stay in Munich despite no assurances from the club over playing time.
The 18-year-old forward is determined to become a big player for Bayern. While talking to Carre last week (via AS), Tel revealed that several clubs, including Real Madrid, were interested in signing him from Rennes, but he had set his heart on a move to Munich after listening to the club’s project for him.
"“Real Madrid or Bayern? It’s true that many clubs wanted me in 2022. It is very true, but I was only focused on Bayern. I didn’t have another choice because I appreciated their project and the people behind the project.”"
Bayern paid a fee close to €28.5 million for the 17-year-old Mathys Tel in 2022. The French forward had a decent debut season, scoring five goals across all competitions. He was eager to stay in Munich after his debut season to learn from the best players and polish the rough edges of his game.
The French forward has already matched last season’s goal tally. He is expected to at least score ten goals across all competitions. It will be a significant step in his development. Tel can end up becoming a crucial member of the squad by the end of the season, which is an incredible feat since he recently turned 18.
Bayern and Tuchel are carefully managing Tel. They probably don’t want to give him starts at the moment since he is making a great impact in small spells on the pitch. Moreover, his workload needs to be managed carefully at the age of 18 to make sure he has a long and healthy career.

Mathys Tel can become a key player for Bayern for more than a decade if he keeps on getting better. For now, it does look like his role has been well-defined by Tuchel and Die Roten. However, he will soon become a contender to start games if goals keep flowing for the youngster. The Bavarian club has done a fine job of getting him before he turns into one of the best players in Europe.
