The last three months have seen a lot of board-level restructuring at Bayern Munich. The Bavarian club appointed Jan Christian-Dreesen as the new CEO after sacking Oliver Kahn in May. Dreesen adopted a hands-on approach regarding transfers this summer, along with the help of Thomas Tuchel and Marco Neppe.
Dreesen is now focussing on other duties of CEO after the arrival of Christoph Freund from RB Salzburg. Freund is succeeding Hasan Salihamidzic in the sporting director role. The restructuring of the board level is expected to continue as Bayern are set to make an approach for Max Eberl.
Eberl was sacked by RB Leipzig as sporting director on Tuesday. The last few days have seen him heavily linked with a move to Bayern. According to the latest update from Sky Sports in Germany, Bayern wants to bring Eberl for the vacant position of board member for sport. Uli Hoeness is particularly keen on bringing Eberl to Munich.
Meanwhile, Sport1 is also confirming Bayern’s plan to hire Eberl. The Bavarian club wants Eberl to be the strategic head of football at the board level, while Freund will be working as sporting director close to the first team and youth teams.
Eberl was heavily linked with a move to Bayern in 2017 when they were looking for a new sporting director. The German was then working at Borussia Monchengladbach in the same capacity. Die Roten eventually went ahead with Hasan Salihamidzic for the sporting director position, but links with Eberl have persisted over the years.
The former Bayern defender did impressive work at Monchengladbach. He eventually moved to RB Leipzig at the end of 2022. Eberl was appointed as a sporting CEO by RB Leipzig. The last few days have seen Bayern being heavily linked with him, so things have fallen into place for the Bavarian club to make the move.
It will be intriguing to see how Eberl and Freund will function together. Both of them have experience working in the Red Bull setup. The arrival of Eberl could well be the start of a new era at Bayern in terms of sporting strategies, from recruitment at all levels to appointment of coaches on set philosophies.

The arrival of Eberl will definitely complete the revamp of the board level over the past few months. Bayern had a muddled strategy on and off the pitch last season. The Bavarian faithful will hope that these changes help the team to enjoy consistent success on the pitch over the coming years.
