Bayern Munich: Leon Goretzka backs Nagelsmann to succeed with Germany
The German national team had a whirlwind first international break of the campaign. Hansi Flick was sacked as the head coach after the 4-0 defeat against Japan. DFB turned their attention towards appointing former Bayern Munich coach Julian Nagelsmann to replace Flick.
Bayern made the process smoother for DFB by not requesting compensation for Nagelsmann. The Bavarian club was expected to get a fee for the German coach since he was still on their payroll. If any club was interested in signing Nagelsmann, they would have to negotiate a fee with Bayern.
The financial constraints for DFB made sure that Die Roten would not get compensation for Nagelsmann. The Bavarian club terminated Nagelsmann’s contract. He was announced as the new head coach of Germany last week. The 36-year-old head coach’s first competitive game will be against USA on October 14.
Nagelsmann will be reunited with several Bayern players at the German national team. Leon Goretzka enjoyed working with Nagelsmann at Bayern. While talking to ZDF on Tuesday (via iMiaSanMia), Goretzka insisted that Nagelsmann was the most logical option for the German national team after the departure of Flick.
"“It was a bit of a logical step. He’s simply an outstanding coach, I think everyone in Germany knows that. He still had a contract at Bayern, but no active position, so it was the logical step for me – I’m glad that we now have a great football coach and I’m confident that we’ll carry on the momentum that we already had in the last game”"
Goretzka will be hoping to get a call-up for the German national team during the next international break in October. He was not called up by Flick despite a solid start to the campaign with Bayern. The German midfielder remains in good form, so a call-up in October is likely.

Head Coach opportunity with Germany comes at right time for Nagelsmann
Nagelsmann had an up-and-down spell at Bayern. He helped the Bavarian club to retain the Bundesliga title in his debut season, but things didn’t go as per plan in the cup competitions. The second season for Nagelsmann was good in patches, which effectively led to his departure in March.
Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, and Paris Saint-Germain were heavily linked with Nagelsmann during the summer transfer window. However, talks never reached the stage of negotiations with Bayern for a compensation fee.
Nagelsmann will look to learn from the lessons at Bayern and get instant results with Germany. The 36-year-old coach has signed a one-year deal, so it is the perfect arrangement for all parties. Nagelsmann’s rep was tarnished a bit by the way things ended at Bayern. Helping the national team to go deep in Euros on home soil next summer. A strong performance for Germany at Euros will help Nagelsmann to establish himself again at the highest level.
