The summer transfer window came to an end last week, but clubs continue to work on their long-term targets. Bayern Munich are also expected to start working on future targets after the appointment of Christoph Freund as the new sporting director. The first big task on hand for Freund will be securing the future of Alphonso Davies amidst interest from a big European club.
According to Marca, Real Madrid have identified Alphonso Davies as the top target to strengthen the left-back area next summer. Davies has two years left on his contract at Bayern, so Real Madrid are keenly following his situation in Bavaria.
This is not the first time Real Madrid are showing interest in the Canadian full-back. Davies was previously linked with the Spanish capital last season. However, a move away from Munich this summer was out of question. Die Roten considers Davies a crucial member of the squad.
Bayern are eager to offer a new deal to Davies. The Canadian full-back’s agent had an agreement with the club for a new deal last season, but the departure of Hasan Salihamidzic has changed things completely. Die Roten will have to reopen talks with representatives of Davies for a new contract. The full-back has now delayed contract talks until the start of 2024.
Davies has been a crucial player for Bayern ever since arriving from the Vancouver Whitecaps in 2019. The Canadian seamlessly adapted to the left-back position under Hansi Flick and helped Die Roten to lift the Champions League in 2020. In the last three seasons, he has firmly established himself as one of the best left-backs in the world.
The best is yet to come for Davies, as he turns 23 in November. He could well become Die Roten’s left-back for the next decade, so it is crucial for the club to extend the contract sooner rather than later. In an ideal scenario, a contract extension is agreed before the end of the season.
Real Madrid have taken top players from Bayern in the recent past. Toni Kroos and David Alaba left Bayern to join Real Madrid. Both players have enjoyed success and made sure Die Roten regrets their departures. The Bavarian club will be desperate to avoid a similar scenario with Davies.

Alphonso Davies has made a fine start to the Bundesliga campaign, with three assists in the three gameweeks. The Canadian full-back indeed has the upper hand in the negotiations with Die Roten. It will be intriguing to see how Freund and the new management handle his situation in the coming months.
