The final days of the transfer window are likely to be dominated by one big change in the defensive department of Bayern Munich. The Bavarian club is expected to part ways with Benjamin Pavard before the end of the window. Inter Milan already have a bid accepted for Pavard, but the transfer will go through once Die Roten finds a replacement.

The defending Bundesliga champions have turned their attention towards a young defender from Chelsea to replace Pavard. According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Bayern are working on a deal to sign Trevoh Chalobah from Chelsea. The Bavarian club is holding talks with Chelsea for the 24-year-old defender.

Sky Sports in Germany is reporting that Bayern want to sign Chalobah on a loan deal, while Chelsea wants a sale. The English defender is open to leaving London to join Die Roten, but there is significant work to be done to complete the deal.

Chalobah got an adequate amount of playing time at Chelsea during Thomas Tuchel’s stint. He can operate as a center-back in a back three and slot in the right-back position if needed. The 24-year-old is a solid defender who is yet to enter the peak years of his career. It will be a smart move for Die Roten if they manage to convince Chelsea to sanction a loan deal.

Bayern have been linked with several versatile center-backs in the past couple of days. West Ham United’s Thilo Kehrer and Southampton’s Armel Bella-Kotchap were reported as possible targets for Die Roten to replace Pavard.

Thomas Tuchel has been eager to keep Pavard at Bayern. The German coach likes Pavard for his versatility and reliability in performances, but he has to reluctantly give up on him due to the French defender’s contract situation. Pavard can start negotiating with interesting clubs for a free transfer as soon as January.

Pavard has missed training on a couple of days this week due to illness. The French defender didn’t play a minute against Werder Bremen amidst speculation regarding his future at the club. He is likely to start on the bench against Augsburg on Sunday if a transfer to Inter Milan is not completed.
