The goalkeeping department in the senior team may become a crucial area to address for Bayern Munich. Manuel Neuer is far from making a return from a leg injury that has kept him on the sidelines for more than seven months. It does look like Die Roten’s anxious wait for Neuer’s wait is going to be much longer than previously anticipated.

According to Sport1, there are growing concerns at Bayern over Neuer’s return to action. The German goalkeeper has decreased the workload in the past few days. This report also suggests that club officials think that Neuer’s return may return to action in 2024 and play no part in the first half of the season.

Meanwhile, Bild is reporting that Neuer is currently struggling with shooting and passing exercises. The German media outlet insists that the best scenario for Neuer will be that he returns for Bayern in eight to ten weeks. There is a genuine chance of Neuer missing the entire Hinrunde.

Manuel Neuer has been on the sidelines since the end of December 2022. The German international broke his leg due to a freak accident during a ski trip after the World Cup 2022. Neuer was initially expected to be fit for the start of the pre-season training, but he was behind schedule in his recovery process when players returned to Sabner Strasse in July.

The former Schalke goalkeeper stayed in Munich to continue his recovery when the rest of the squad went to Asia for the pre-season tour. Neuer underwent surgery on Sunday to remove metal implants from his fibula. The German goalkeeper has resumed rehabilitative training after this surgery.

With a lack of clarity over the return of Neuer, Bayern will have to step up their pursuit of signing a new goalkeeper in the coming days. Yann Sommer left the club this week to join Inter Milan. As things stand, Sven Ulreich is expected to start against RB Leipzig in DFL Supercup on Sunday.

Bayern should look to get a number one and invest properly in the goalkeeping department. Neuer is 37, so there are no guarantees that he will be back to his best when he returns from such a long lay-off. The Bundesliga champions need to see the bigger picture and add a top-class goalkeeper to the squad before the end of the transfer window.

Brentford’s David Raya was one of the top candidates to join Bayern’s goalkeeping department. The Spaniard rejected the loan proposal from Die Roten. Raya is now closing on a permanent move to Arsenal. Sevilla’s Yassine Bounou has also been heavily linked with Die Roten this summer.
