Bayern Munich is exploring the goalkeeper market to improve their squad for next season. Inter Milan is closing on a move for Bayern’s Yann Sommer. Die Roten wants to replace Sommer with a new goalkeeper that can provide cover for Manuel Neuer. It does look like Bayern has identified the top target for this role.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Bayern is holding talks to sign David Raya from Brentford. The Spanish goalkeeper is a top priority for Die Roten to replace Sommer in the squad. The Swiss goalkeeper has already reached an agreement over personal terms with Inter Milan.
Bild’s Tobi Altschaffl and Sky Sports have also confirmed that Raya is the top target for Die Roten when it comes to replacing Yann Sommer. It remains to be seen if Rekordmeister reaches an agreement with Brentford for a reasonable fee. Bayern will get more clarity on the fitness of Manuel Neuer in the coming days as he continues his recovery process at Sabner Strasse.
Brentford has valued Raya at £40 million despite having only a year left on his contract. The Spaniard was reportedly priced out of a move to Tottenham Hotspur earlier this summer. Die Roten will not come anywhere close to paying that kind of fee for Raya, as they don’t want to spend heavily on a goalkeeper in this transfer window.
Meanwhile, Thomas Tuchel wants a very solid backup for Manuel Neuer. The German international was previously expected to be fit by the start of pre-season training. However, Neuer may need a few more days to complete the recovery from a serious leg injury that has kept him out for the past seven months. It remains to be seen if he will be fit for the start of the season.
Raya will be a very solid addition to Bayern’s squad if a deal goes through. The Spaniard has been one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League for the past two seasons. Along with being a good shot-stopper, Raya is also very comfortable on the ball. Raya also has several years at the top level, as he turns 28 in September.
The next few days will be decisive regarding a deal for Raya, as Inter Milan is looking to wrap up a deal for Sommer. Bayern needs to get a replacement ready since Neuer is still recovering from a leg injury. Sven Ulreich will be in the goal for DFL Supercup if Bayern is not able to seal a deal for Sommer’s replacement in the next few days.

Raya is not the only Spanish goalkeeper linked with Bayern in the past few days. Former Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea was also offered to Die Roten. The 32-year-old shot-stopper became a free agent after leaving Manchester United earlier this summer. De Gea is not the ideal fit for Die Roten, and his wages will be a significant stumbling block to conclude a deal.
