Bayern Munich: Marcel Sabitzer set to join Borussia Dortmund
Bayern Munich presented the squad to fans at Allianz Arena on Sunday before the squad travels to Japan later today for the pre-season tour. Despite featuring in the squad presentation on Sunday, several players are expected to leave Die Roten before the end of the transfer window. Marcel Sabitzer is the latest Bayern player to seal a move away from Bavaria.
According to Sky Sports in Germany and Sport1, Borussia Dortmund has reached an agreement with Bayern to sign Sabitzer. The Austrian midfielder has agreed to join Dortmund despite previously favouring a move to England and Italy.
Sky Sports has also reported that Bayern will receive €19 million including add-ons from Dortmund for Marcel Sabitzer. The Bavarian club wanted a fee over €15 million to part ways with the Austrian midfielder. Sabitzer was spotted travelling to Dortmund on Monday to complete the medical and sign the deal.
The Austrian midfielder was not part of Bayern’s plans since last season. He left Die Roten on loan in January to get regular game time. The 29-year-old midfielder had a productive loan spell at Manchester United, but the English club decided against pursuing a permanent deal for him.
Roma had shown concrete interest in Sabitzer this summer. However, the Italian club was interested in a loan deal. Bayern was not keen on entertaining loan offers for Sabitzer. Dortmund’s interest in Sabitzer became concrete last week. They managed to convince Sabitzer, and the deal accelerated over the weekend.
After excelling at RB Leipzig for numerous seasons, Marcel Sabitzer struggled to make an impact at Bayern. The Austrian midfielder arrived in Munich at the end of the summer transfer window in 2021. He struggled for regular playing time during the debut season in Bavaria, which led to speculation about his future.
Sabitzer decided to stay and fight for a place in the starting XI. After starting the second season on a strong note, Sabitzer found himself out of the starting lineup before the World Cup 2022. He eventually decided to join Manchester United on the deadline day in January to get regular playing time. The Austrian midfielder was not in the club’s plans for next season, so a transfer was inevitable.

Bayern will make a small profit on Sabitzer as they paid €15 million for him in 2021. The Bavarian club has already bolstered the midfield by signing Konrad Laimer from RB Leipzig. Thomas Tuchel wants to sign a holding midfielder, so Bayern will most likely explore options for this position later in the window.
