Bayern Munich: Thomas Tuchel wants a strong deputy for Manuel Neuer
Bayern Munich had a pretty good run out in the first pre-season friendly game against FC Rottach-Egern on Tuesday. The Bavarian club started Sven Ulreich in the goal during this game as Yann Sommer and Alexander Nubel were not in the squad for the game as they are likely to leave Bayern in the coming days.
Inter Milan is pushing for the signing of Sommer. The Italian club wants Sommer to replace Andre Onana, who is set to join Manchester United. Meanwhile, Nubel is attracting interest from Leeds United and VfB Stuttgart. The former Schalke goalkeeper doesn’t want to stay at Die Roten due to a lack of assurances regarding playing time.
With Sommer and Nubel expected to leave, Ulreich will be the senior goalkeeper for Bayern during the pre-season tour. Manuel Neuer needs more time to recover from a leg injury that has kept him out since December 2022. It remains to be seen if Neuer will be completely fit for the start of the season.
Bayern needs to beef up the goalkeeping department due to the potential departures of Sommer and Nubel. The Bavarian club doesn’t want to spend heavily on the number two, but Thomas Tuchel seems to have a different opinion on the goalkeeping situation.
According to SportBild, Tuchel wants Bayern to sign a strong number two due to the uncertainty over the fitness of Manuel Neuer. Sven Ulreich has been a fine goalkeeper for Bayern, but they definitely need a stronger number two that can push Neuer and also deputize for him if his fitness doesn’t hold up next season.
SportBild also confirms that Valencia’s Giorgi Mamardashvili and Sevilla’s Yassine Bounou are on Die Roten’s club shortlist to replace Sommer in the squad. The German media outlet also reveals that Brighton’s Robert Sanchez is also on the club’s radar for the number two position.
Tuchel is justified for wanting a strong number two since Neuer’s injury was very serious. The German international is 37, and it remains to be seen if he will be at his best after such a long lay-off. Having a very good number two will allow Bayern to not worry about Neuer’s form and give him as much time to get back in rhythm.

Die Roten may have to be slightly flexible with their budget for a new goalkeeper. All three potential options will be slightly expensive, so they may have to stretch the budget for a new shot-stopper. With Sommer and Nubel closing on moves away from Bavaria, there could be movement from Bayern in the market for a new goalkeeper in the coming days.
