Bayern Munich identify two replacements for Yann Sommer
A goalkeeper domino involving Bayern Munich may take place in Europe during the next few days. The Bavarian club is expected to receive an approach from Inter Milan to sign Yann Sommer. The Italian club has reportedly identified Sommer as one of their top targets to sign Manchester United-bound Andre Onana.
Bayern reportedly has a transfer agreement with Yann Sommer, so they are likely to sanction a move if Inter Milan comes up with a concrete offer. The Bavarian club will need to sort out a replacement for Sommer since he was expected to be number two behind Manuel Neuer next season.
According to SportBild (via iMiaSanMia), Bayern has two goalkeepers on the shortlist to replace Yann Sommer. Sevilla’s Yassine Bounou and Valencia’s Giorgi Mamardashvili are the two top contenders to replace Sommer if he completes a move to Inter Milan in the coming days.
Bayern has been linked with Mamardashvili earlier this window. The Georgian goalkeeper has been scouted by the Bavarian club to become the potential successor of Manuel Neuer. Valencia is expected to demand a significant fee for the 22-year-old shot-stopper since his contract expires in 2027.
Meanwhile, Bounou will be a like-for-like replacement for Sommer when it comes to experience. The Moroccan goalkeeper was linked with a move to Bavaria in January before Die Roten signed Sommer from Borussia Monchengladbach. Along with SportBild, Relevo in Spain also reported Die Roten’s interest in the 32-year-old shot-stopper.
Inter Milan is expected to make a bid sooner rather than later, so Bayern may have to start working on deals to sign one of these two goalkeeping options. Since Sommer is likely to be sold for a small fee, Die Roten may not be open to spending a big fee for a number two.
Along with Sommer, Bayern is also expected to boost the transfer funds for a new goalkeeper by selling Alexander Nubel. The former Schalke goalkeeper has been heavily linked with VfB Stuttgart, but a deal is yet to materialise. He is expected to leave Die Roten permanently this summer despite reporting for pre-season at Sabner Strasse on Thursday.

Bayern does have concerns about the availability of Manuel Neuer for the start of the season. The German goalkeeper is unlikely to be part of the pre-season tour of Asia as he needs more time to recover from a leg injury that kept him out for six months. In such a scenario, Rekordmeister needs a quick resolution on the future of Sommer one way or the other to prepare for the next season.
