Bayern Munich identify long-term goalkeeping target
Bayern Munich has to address multiple areas of the squad this summer. The Bavarian club is set to part ways with a couple of players in defense. Bayern also needs to replace Robert Lewandowski this summer. They didn’t sign a classic number nine last summer after Lewandowski’s departure, which eventually harmed the team last season.
Die Roten has identified Harry Kane as the top target to replace Lewandowski in the squad. The Bundesliga champions have definitely learned a key lesson from the way they handled Lewandowski’s departure. They cannot afford to stand still and wait for the right player if an experienced player leaves the club.
The Bavarian club will face a similar problem when Manuel Neuer decides to hang his boots. The German goalkeeper is expected to be number one at Bayern next season, but the club chiefs are also seeing the big picture as they look for Neuer’s long-term successor.
According to Fabrizio Romano and Georgian journalist Lasha Kokiashvili, Valencia’s Giorgi Mamardashvili is on the list of targets at Bayern. It remains to be seen if Die Roten wants to sign the 22-year-old goalkeeper this summer, but personal terms will not be an issue for the Bavarian club.
Sky Sports News in Germany has also confirmed that Mamardashvili is one of the options for Die Roten as the long-term successor of Neuer. The Bavarian club wants to resolve the futures of Yann Sommer and Alexander Nubel before exploring a transfer for a new goalkeeper. Along with Mamardashvili, Rekordmeister is scouting several young goalkeepers.
Bayern currently has four senior goalkeepers in the squad. They will have to sell two goalkeepers this summer to sign Mamardashvili. The 22-year-old Georgian goalkeeper is attracting interest from several big clubs in Europe due to his impressive performances for Valencia. The Spanish club can demand a significant fee for Giorgi Mamardashvili since he has four years left on his contract.
Die Roten may look into a move for Mamardashvili later in the window. They are ready to listen to offers for Nubel. The former Schalke goalkeeper will be at Sabner Strasse for pre-season training after spending the last two seasons on loan at Monaco. He wants to play regularly next season, so a permanent departure from Bayern is looking likely.

Meanwhile, Sommer will become number two at Bayern after the return of Neuer. The Swiss goalkeeper has a transfer agreement with Die Roten for this summer. He may end up leaving Bavaria to get regular game time ahead of next summer’s Euros. Sven Ulreich and Neuer are expected to stay at Bayern for next season. If the transfers for Sommer and Nubel are completed this summer, then a move for Giorgi Mamardashvili becomes a concrete possibility.
