Bayern Munich: Marcel Sabitzer subject to interest from AS Roma
The midfield department at Bayern Munich is undergoing several changes this summer. Konrad Laimer completed a move to Die Roten at the start of June. The Austrian midfielder has been a long-term target for Rekordmeister. They tried to sign him last summer, but Leipzig rejected all bids. Laimer joined Bayern on a free transfer this summer.
The Bavarian club is also keen on adding a number six to the squad. The top target for this position was Declan Rice, but he is closing on a move to Arsenal. Kalvin Phillips, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, and Sofyan Amrabat are reportedly on the alternative list of targets for this position.
Along with adding new midfielders to the squad, Bayern will also look to part ways with a few players in the same position.Marcel Sabitzer looks like a certain departure in the midfield department at Die Roten this summer. The Austrian midfielder may get a move to Serie A in the ongoing transfer window.
According to Corsport (via iMiaSanMia), AS Roma is interested in signing Marcel Sabitzer. The Italian club wants to sign the Austrian midfielder to replace Georginio Wijnaldum. Roma will look to get Sabitzer on a loan deal, but Die Roten will mostly want a permanent departure.
Marcel Sabitzer had an underwhelming spell at Bayern since arriving from RB Leipzig in 2021. He struggled for consistent game time under Julian Nagelsmann during his debut season. There was a lot of speculation about his future last summer, but he decided to stay in Bavaria.
The Austrian midfielder started last season on a good note. He was paired with Joshua Kimmich in the central midfield since Leon Goretzka missed the start of the season due to injury. Sabitzer delivered good performances during this period. However, Nagelsmann reverted to the midfield pairing of Kimmich and Goretzka when team performances were on a downward trajectory.
Sabitzer sealed a loan move to Manchester United on the final day of the winter transfer window to get regular playing time. The 28-year-old midfielder had a decent spell at Old Trafford, ending up with three goals and one assist in 18 appearances during the second half of the season. Unfortunately, Sabitzer’s season came to an end in early May due to a meniscus injury.
