Bayern Munich has already taken a significant step to improve the midfield options for next season by signing Konrad Laimer from RB Leipzig on a free transfer. Raphael Guerreiro is also an option in midfield for Bayern. The versatile Portuguese completed his free transfer to Die Roten on Friday.
The Bundesliga champions still want to sign one more midfielder this summer despite the arrivals of Laimer and Guerreiro. Bayern particularly wants to sign a number six that can help in pushing Joshua Kimmich into the number eight role.
West Ham United’s Declan Rice was Die Roten’s top target for the number six role. However, the English midfielder is set to stay in the Premier League. Arsenal and Manchester City are battling to sign him. Moreover, he is going to cost more than £100 million this summer. Bayern cannot afford to pay that kind of money for one player.
Die Roten is looking at other alternatives for this position. The latest update from Germany suggests that another English midfielder is on the list of targets for Die Roten. According to SportBild’s Christian Falk, Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips is on Bayern’s shortlist for midfield options. PSV Eindhoven’s Ibrahim Sangare is another defensive midfielder that Die Roten is closely following.
TZ (viaiMiaSanMia) has also confirmed Bayern’s interest in Phillips. The club hierarchy believes that Phillips will not be an expensive option for Die Roten since he has struggled for game time at Manchester City. His future will be more uncertain if the European champions end up signing Rice from West Ham.
Phillips shone for Leeds United in the Premier League for two seasons before joining Manchester City last summer. The English midfielder was also a pivotal player for England in World Cup and Euros 2020. The move to Manchester City has not worked out for Phillips until now due to poor form and injuries.

The 27-year-old midfielder is not eagerly looking for a move away from Man City as he hopes to enjoy a much better second season at the club. However, he will have to consider options if the Premier League champions look to sell him. It remains to be seen what transfer fee Man City will ask for Phillips. Pep Guardiola’s team paid close to £50 million for him last summer.
Phillips will be a decent addition for Die Roten since he is a very good defensive midfielder. The English midfielder is at the peak of his career. He has the qualities of an ideal number six that plays in a possession-dominating team. This transfer is unlikely to happen now, but one to watch out as the window progresses.
