Bayern Munich: Yann Sommer relaxed about future amidst speculation
Manuel Neuer will not feature for Germany in international games this week as he continues to recover from a serious leg injury. Bayern Munich is hopeful to have Neuer back in full training at the start of pre-season training in July. He has already started doing light training on the pitch during the last few weeks of the season.
Neuer has been on the sidelines since December after suffering a leg injury during a freak accident on a ski trip. In the absence of Neuer, Bayern signed Yann Sommer from Borussia Monchengladbach in January. The Swiss goalkeeper endured a mixed five months as Die Roten’s number one, but it ended well on a positive note with a Bundesliga title.
Despite arriving in Munich during the winter window, Sommer’s future is far from certain in Bavaria. Bayern reportedly has a transfer agreement with the Swiss goalkeeper that will allow him to leave in the summer after Neuer’s return to fitness.
Yann Sommer has been linked with several clubs in the past few weeks, including Manchester United. However, the Swiss international remains relaxed about his future. While talking to 20 Minuten, Sommer insisted that he is yet to make a decision on his future at Bayern. He is currently focussing on international games with Switzerland.
"“I still have two years of contract with Bayern and I’m very happy about that. That’s why I’m very relaxed. Now I’m with the national team, then a few days of vacation and I’ll think about the future.”"
Sommer also insisted that he enjoys a healthy relationship with Neuer. It was far from perfect six months for Sommer as he was heavily criticised for some costly mistakes in games. The Swiss goalkeeper is pleased with the way his season ended at Bayern.
Bayern will have four senior goalkeepers in the squad at the start of the pre-season. Sommer, Neuer, and Sven Ulreich have been at the club since last season. They will be joined by Alexander Nubel as he returns from his loan spell with Monaco. Nubel has been on loan at Monaco for the last two seasons.
Die Roten will have to trim the goalkeeping department before the start of next season. The Bavarian club is open to listening to offers for Nubel. The former Schalke goalkeeper has no plans to warm the bench in Munich after playing regularly at Monaco. He would have stayed at Bayern if he got assurances over game time.

The record Bundesliga champions will not be in a rush to sell Yann Sommer. The Swiss goalkeeper will have a decision to make in the summer. If he wants to play regularly, then leaving Bayern becomes a concrete option. The Bavarian club will most likely keep him if he is ready to be a number two next season. The ball is firmly in Sommer’s court.
