The upcoming summer transfer window will see a mini upheaval in the midfield department at Bayern Munich. The Bavarian club has already agreed a deal with Konrad Laimer for a summer transfer. The Austrian midfielder will join Die Roten in July when his contract with RB Leipzig comes to an end.

Apart from Laimer, Bayern remains keen on signing another midfielder. Thomas Tuchel reportedly wants a robust ball-playing midfielder for the number six position. The Bavarian club is scouring the market for this position.

Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan is set to attract a lot of interest in the summer since his contract is coming to an end in June. According to SportBild (via iMiaSanMia), Bayern has rejected the chance to sign Gundogan. The German midfielder was offered to Die Roten by his entourage, but they have enough options in his position.

Gundogan has largely excelled in the number eight position for Manchester City in the last seven years. Along with showing great vision in the final third, Gundogan also has a knack for scoring important goals by making late runs in the box. He has been in fine form for Man City this season as they are on the verge of winning a treble.

Thomas Tuchel has several options in the number eight position. Ryan Gravenberch, Jamal Musiala, and Leon Goretzka can play in this position. Konrad Laimer and Joshua Kimmich are also likely to feature in this role next season, so it makes sense to reject the chance of signing Gundogan.

Ilkay Gundogan would have definitely excelled at Bayern. He has previously done well in the Bundesliga during his spell at Borussia Dortmund. However, Bayern needs a different profile of midfielder. Moreover, targeting younger options will be better than giving a longer deal to a 32-year-old central midfielder.

Bayern has been heavily linked with a move for Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez for the number six position. The Mexican midfielder is also attracting interest from Borussia Dortmund. If Bayern is going to sign another midfielder in the summer, it is likely to be more of Alvarez’s ilk than Gundogan.

In terms of midfield departures, Marcel Sabitzer looks certain to leave Bavaria in the summer. The Austrian midfielder had a productive loan spell at Manchester United, but it remains to be seen if the English side will sign him permanently. Ryan Gravenberch may also end up leaving Bayern if he doesn’t get assurances regarding playing time.
