The 2022/23 season is turning out to be one of the worst for Bayern Munich in the recent past. The last few weeks have been particularly poor for the team as they were knocked out of the Champions League and DFB Pokal. They have also conceded the top place in the points table to Borussia Dortmund after the 3-2 defeat against Mainz.
Bayern has been largely inconsistent in the Bundesliga this season. The inconsistency in the Bundesliga eventually led to the departure of Julian Nagelsmann at the end of March. The club hierarchy made the ruthless decision to sack Nagelsmann and appoint Thomas Tuchel as the new head coach.
The arrival of Tuchel has not made the desired impact, which has added pressure on key men at Bayern. The club CEO Oliver Kahn is particularly under more pressure due to poor results on the pitch. Earlier this week, former Bayern president Uli Hoeness was spotted in training at Sabner Strasse, having discussions with Tuchel. The presence of Hoeness does raise the chances of him returning to the club in a prominent role.
Sky Sports in Germany has revealed that Hoeness still enjoys significant power at the club. The former club president played a key role in the arrival of Thomas Tuchel at the club. Hoeness doesn’t play a role in day-to-day operations at Bayern, but he does have a big say in the major decisions that are made by the club.
The former club president also has a role to play in transfers. Hasan Salihamidzic is consistently in touch with Hoeness to discuss transfer ideas. His and the supervisory board’s approval is crucial for transfers that would cost more than €25 million.
Considering the amount of power Hoeness already enjoys at the club, he may not come back in some sort of defined role (president, CEO, etc). However, he may have a big say in the future of Kahn and Salihamidzic if things continue to spiral down on the pitch.

In an ideal scenario, Bayern just relies on Hoeness for input regarding important topics at the club. It will not bode well for the club’s long-term future if they once again bring him for day-to-day operations. For now, any big decision about a change in personnel is unlikely to take place before the end of the season. The Bavarian club will hope to end the season strongly by regaining the Bundesliga.
