The start of April has been a mixed bag for Bayern Munich. After clinching a crucial win against Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga on Saturday, Bayern suffered a big setback on Tuesday. The Bavarian club was knocked out of the DFB Pokal by Freiburg at Allianz Arena.

Bayern had started the game strongly on Tuesday by scoring the first goal inside 20 minutes. However, Die Roten was not able to show ruthlessness in the final third to double their advantage. The lack of effectiveness higher up the pitch allowed Freiburg to get back in the game and eventually score the winner in the final minute of the game.

It was a disappointing result, but not entirely surprising one since Bayern have not fared well in the DFB Pokal over the last three seasons. Moreover, Die Roten’s overall form in 2023 has been concerning. The Bavarian club had parted ways with Julian Nagelsmann during the international break due to inconsistent results and performances in 2023.

Thomas Tuchel was appointed as the new head coach two weeks ago. The German manager got off to a good start, but things went downhill in his second game. While talking to the media on Tuesday, Bayern midfielder Joshua Kimmich identified a worrying trait in the team’s performances. Kimmich also highlighted that Bayern is currently missing one key quality on the pitch.

"“We’re losing too many games after taking the lead. Our clear goal was to go to Berlin. You get the feeling that there’s a bit too little passion.”"

Kimmich’s concerns are understandable. The drop in intensity is largely due to the number of games players have played this season for club and country. However, they need to do the basics right to have a successful end to the season, even if football is not attractive in every game.

Tuchel needs to reignite the passion in the team and helps them to grind out victories in the upcoming weeks. The dream of winning another treble is over after the defeat against Freiburg. However, there is still a lot to play for in the Champions League and Bundesliga.

Bayern is currently leading the league table by two points. They need to win all of their last eight league games to retain the title. Tuchel needs to make sure that standards and intensity are not dropped in the Bundesliga, which has been often the case this season whenever Bayern has been at the top of the table.

Meanwhile, Die Roten will face Manchester City in the Champions League quarter-finals over the next few weeks. The first leg will take place in Manchester on April 11. Bayern cannot afford any lapse in concentration and intensity during this game since Manchester City is one of the best teams in Europe. The English club often makes the most of mistakes from the opposition.
