The last 24 hours have been chaotic for Bayern Munich as the club hierarchy decided to part ways with Julian Nagelsmann. The German coach is set to be relieved from his duties with immediate effect later today. Meanwhile, Die Roten is already working on a deal to appoint Thomas Tuchel as the new head coach.
The departure of Nagelsmann does come as a shock for the Bavarian faithful since there have been a lot of positives this season. Yes, the form in Bundesliga has been inconsistent, but they remain favourites to successfully defend the league title. The team’s performance against PSG in the second leg of the Champions League round of 16 showed that Nagelsmann was ready to go deep in the competition.
However, the unbeaten run in cup competitions couldn’t save Nagelsmann due to various other reasons. According to Sport1, the poor development of young players by the German coach was one of the key reasons for the club’s decision. Moreover, Nagelsmann didn’t have the entire dressing room on his side, but the club’s decision did surprise the squad.
Sport1 also insisted that Bayern initially wanted to assess Nagelsmann’s future in the summer. However, they didn’t want to miss out on signing Thomas Tuchel. The former PSG coach was reportedly attracting interest from other top clubs in Europe.
The departure of Nagelsmann will be an expensive affair for Bayern. The Bavarian will continue to pay the German coach until he takes up another role. With Tottenham Hotspur and Real Madrid likely to look for a new manager in the next couple of months, Nagelsmann may return to football management sooner rather than later.
Meanwhile, Thomas Tuchel is expected to begin his tenure at Bayern next week. The German coach was heavily linked with a move to Bavaria in 2018 after Carlo Ancelotti was sacked, but he eventually moved to Paris Saint-Germain. After tasting success at PSG and Chelsea, Tuchel is back in the Bundesliga. He previously had very promising spells at Borussia Dortmund and Mainz.
The first assignment for Tuchel will be against his former Bundesliga club. He will get a week with the players before the crunch Bundesliga clash against Borussia Dortmund. The Bavarian club is currently trailing Dortmund by one point in the league table.
