Bayern Munich got back to winning ways in the Bundesliga against Union Berlin on Sunday. It was a convincing display from Bayern as they hammered three first-half goals against Union Berlin to take all three points. The victory on matchday 22 ensured Die Roten remained at the top of the Bundesliga.

Along with playing expansive football in the final third, Bayern conceded very few chances against Union Berlin and kept a clean sheet. Benjamin Pavard was one of the key reasons behind the home side’s clean sheet, as the French defender excelled in central defense.

The former VfB Stuttgart defender has enjoyed a significant amount of playing time in central defense over the past few weeks. Julian Nagelsmann has been using a back three regularly, which allows Pavard to play in his preferred position.

According to AZ’s Maximilian Koch, Bayern hierarchy has been impressed with the recent performances of Benjamin Pavard. The Bavarian club is more hopeful about a contract extension than they were a few weeks ago.

In an interview at the end of December, Pavard admitted that he would be open to listening to new projects. He was looking to hear clubs that may allow him to play in central defense. The French defender has largely played in the right-back position for Rekordmeister in the past three years.

After Pavard’s interview, Bayern made it clear that he was not going anywhere in the winter transfer window. They rejected a bid from Inter Milan for Benjamin Pavard on the deadline day. Meanwhile, FC Barcelona has also reportedly registered concrete interest in the former VfB Stuttgart defender. The record Bundesliga champions will try to initiate contract talks with him in the coming weeks.

Julian Nagelsmann is also eager to see Pavard extending his stay in Bavaria. The German coach convinced him to stay at the club last summer. He will try to change Pavard’s mind once again since the French defender is getting more opportunities to play in the heart of the defense. The arrival of Joao Cancelo has benefitted Pavard since the Portuguese operates in the right-back position.
