Bayern Munich currently has several options in the goalkeeping department after signing Yann Sommer from Borussia Monchengladbach. The Swiss goalkeeper was signed on a permanent deal by Bayern after Manuel Neuer was ruled out for the rest of the season due to a broken leg.

Alexander Nubel and Sven Ulreich are the other senior goalkeepers in Die Roten’s books. Before signing Sommer, Bayern was eager to replace Neuer for Ruckrunde by recalling Nubel from his loan spell at Monaco. The German goalkeeper wanted to stay in France until the end of the season, and Monaco was also not keen to release him six months before the end of the loan deal.

The latest development in France suggests that Nubel may not have a long-term future at Monaco. According to L’Equipe (via GGFN), Monaco is not keen on signing Nubel on a permanent deal in the summer. The French club is concerned about Nubel’s recent dip in form and his performances in big games, such as the defeat against Bayer Leverkusen in Europa League a few days ago.

The report from L’Equipe also confirms that Monaco has already started their search for a new goalkeeper. It is a significant blow for Nubel since he was open to staying at the French club beyond the current campaign.

Alexander Nubel is expected to report for pre-season training at Bayern in the summer. After spending time on the bench during his debut season in Bavaria, Nubel got significant playing time at Monaco in the last 18 months. Before the recent dip in performances the former Schalke goalkeeper did a fine job for Monaco as their number-one goalkeeper.

Bayern has always considered Nubel as the long-term successor of Neuer. The record Bundesliga champions reportedly want to extend his contract. Nubel’s current deal expires in 2025. However, the 26-year-old shot-stopper will stay in Bavaria if he is assured adequate playing time from next season.

It does look like the relationship between Julian Nagelsmann and Neuer has strained a bit after the sacking of goalkeeping coach Toni Tapalovic. Neuer was annoyed by the club’s decision since he had enjoyed a good working relationship with Tapalovic for over a decade.

The uncertainty around Neuer and Sommer’s age (34) opens a window for Nubel at Bayern. It remains to be seen if Die Roten is also open to integrating him into the starting XI on a consistent basis from next season. For now, Nubel’s future is likely to be away from Monaco.
