The second half of the season is key for the squad building at Bayern Munich as they look to secure the future of key players. The Bavarian club seems to have found a big breakthrough in contract negotiations with one of the senior players in the squad.

According to SportBild (via GGFN), Bayern has reached an agreement in principle with Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting for a new contract. The final details of the deal remain to be discussed, but talks have moved in the positive direction, as per SportBild. The Cameroon international has just over four months left on his contract.

Choupo-Moting has been open to signing a new deal, but contract talks were expected to be complex due to the length of the new deal and possibly a hike in wages. Manchester United reportedly had a concrete interest in him during the winter window, but Die Roten had no plans to part ways with him midway through the season.

The former PSG striker has become a vital player for Julian Nagelsmann this season. After the departure of Robert Lewandowski in the summer, Choupo-Moting has become the go-to man for Die Roten to lead the attack.

Nagelsmann decided to make Choupo-Moting the focal point of the attack in October when results were shaky for Bayern in the Bundesliga. His introduction to the starting lineup led to improvement in the final third. The 33-year-old striker was also prolific in front of the goal, along with astute linkup play.

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting has scored 13 goals for Die Roten across all competitions this season. He is on track to score 20 goals for the Bavarian club if he continues the current run of form. His positive influence on the team’s attack further enhances his importance in the current squad.

Bayern is making the right decision by extending Choupo-Moting’s contract. Despite his age, he will be a very handy player for the Bavarian in the next couple of seasons. Moreover, the market is very volatile when it comes to strikers, so Die Roten needs a solid option in the squad.

Apart from Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Bayern is also working on the contract extension of Lucas Hernandez. The French defender is currently on the sidelines due to a serious knee injury, but the Bavarian club is eager to secure his future. Die Roten will also try to extend the contract of Benjamin Pavard in the next couple of months. Pavard is open to exploring a new project, but Bayern wants to keep hold of him. If he refuses to extend his contract, Die Roten will have to listen to offers for him in the summer.
