It has been a good week for Bayern Munich on the pitch as they clinched their first win of 2023. The Bavarian club delivered an emphatic performance to beat Mainz in the round of 16 of DFB Pokal. It was a big relief for Julian Nagelsmann after three consecutive draws in the Bundesliga.

Things are also improving on the injury front for Bayern. They received a big boost on Thursday as Noussair Mazraoui arrived at Sabner Strasse to start training. The Moroccan defender trained indoors as he is still far away from being fully fit, but returning to training is a massive step in the right direction.

Noussair Mazraoui was diagnosed with mild pericarditis after a bout with COVID in December. The former Ajax defender had to take a complete rest before getting the green light from the doctor to start physical activity. It does look like the recovery is in the final stages, as he started training indoors at Sabner Strasse.

The Moroccan defender may still need a few weeks to start training with the first team and make his return to the pitch. Bayern is likely to be cautiously optimistic about Mazraoui’s return before the Champions League game against Paris Saint-Germain in Munich at the start of March.

Bayern currently has enough options in the right-back position after the signing of Joao Cancelo at the end of January. The Portuguese full-back arrived on loan from Manchester City before the deadline day. Benjamin Pavard, Bouna Sarr, and Josip Stanisic are other right-back options for Die Roten in the current squad.

There is no rush to bring Noussair Mazraoui back in action due to the depth in the squad. He will be slowly integrated into the team since he will lack match rhythm after being out of action for two months. The 25-year-old right-back will be hoping to regain the form which he showed for Die Roten before the World Cup 2022.

The other positive injury news for Bayern in the last few days was Sadio Mane resuming training with the ball on the pitch. The Senegalese forward is facing a race against time to be fit for the first leg against PSG in Paris on February 14. Bouna Sarr has also started training with his teammates after recovering from a serious knee injury.

Lucas Hernandez and Manuel Neuer are the long-term absentees for the record Bundesliga champions. Neuer broke his leg during a freak accident on a ski trip in December. He is confident about returning before the start of pre-season training in December. Hernandez is also expected to return in June after suffering a ligament injury during World Cup 2022.
