It has been a chaotic start to the week for Bayern Munich as they pulled off a very smart deal right at the end of the transfer window. The Bavarian club is inching closer to completing a loan deal for Manchester City right-back Joao Cancelo. The Portuguese full-back has arrived in Munich to complete the medical and other formalities.

The arrival of Cancelo does raise questions over the future of other right-backs in the squad. Benjamin Pavard is expected to stay until the summer window, so his departure was ruled out before the deadline day. Josip Stanisic is another player who will see his game time reduced due to the arrival of Cancelo, but he is not going anywhere before Tuesday’s deadline.

According to Bild’s Tobi Altschaffl, Die Roten has no plans to loan out or sell Stanisic before the end of the transfer window. The Croatian defender will be part of the first team for at least until the end of the season. He recently started in the right-back position against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga. Considering the busy schedule ahead in the next few months, it makes sense to retain the majority of the squad.

Stanisic has been steadily establishing himself as the utility man in the squad this season. The Croatian can operate in either full-back position. He has also played in central defense for Die Roten. The 22-year-old defender has racked up 12 appearances for the senior team across all competitions.

Josip Stanisic was also part of the Croatian team that reached the semi-final of the World Cup 2022. His performances in the first team were rewarded by Bayern with a new deal, so it has been a very productive season for him until now. However, the arrival of Cancelo may affect his playing time. The Portuguese defender can also play in both full-back positions.

Stanisic will end up becoming a deputy of Alphonso Davies for the rest of the season. If he ends up with anything 1200 minutes of playing time across all competitions, it will be a successful campaign for his development. For the time being, Stanisic has played 790 minutes for Bayern this season. (Stats courtesy: Whoscored)

Bayern may have to send Stanisic out on loan in the summer if they decide to sign Cancelo on a permanent deal. The Bavarian club has the option to buy him for €70 million. However, Sky Sports in Germany is reporting that Die Roten can negotiate a lower fee with Manchester City at the end of the season.
