After failing to sign a midfielder last summer, Bayern Munich has a deal in place to strengthen the midfield for next season. The Bavarian club has seen off competition from big clubs to reach a pre-contract agreement with RB Leipzig’s Konrad Laimer.

The record Bundesliga champions tried to sign Laimer last summer, but RB Leipzig rejected three bids for the midfielder. Bayern eventually decided to wait for six months and negotiate a free transfer with Laimer. He will be joining the club as a free agent in July once his contract with Leipzig comes to an end.

Laimer’s versatility will improve Bayern’s depth across different midfield positions. However, the arrival of the Austrian midfielder could plunge the future of another midfielder at Die Roten into doubt. The midfielder that could make way for Laimer in the squad is his compatriot, Marcel Sabitzer.

However, Sabitzer is not ready to give up on his chances of playing for Bayern just yet. According to SportBild’s Christian Falk (via iMiaSanMia), Sabitzer is not thinking about a transfer in the summer despite the arrival of Laimer. Sabitzer is ready to fight for a place in the team as he has done this season.

Sabitzer also arrived in Bavaria from Leipzig in 2021. He endured a difficult debut campaign due to poor form and lack of adequate playing time. By the end of his first season, Marcel Sabitzer was already linked with a move away from Bavaria. Atletico Madrid and Arsenal reportedly showed interest in the 28-year-old midfielder.

The Austrian midfielder eventually decided to stay at Bayern at least for one more season. He featured in the starting XI at the start of the season since Leon Goretzka was recovering from an injury. Sabitzer made the most out of these opportunities by delivering quality performances in the center of the park.

The former RB Leipzig midfielder’s playing time did dip by the end of Hinrunde, but he has managed to make a good impact this season than he did in the 2021/22 campaign. The 28-year-old midfielder has one goal and one assist to his name in 14 Bundesliga appearances this season.

Sabitzer is yet to make an appearance for Bayern in 2023. Ryan Gravenberch is ahead of him in the pecking order right now, so he faces another battle to force his way back into the team. The Austrian midfielder has shown great fighting spirit at Die Roten until now, but the arrival of Laimer may eventually force him to look for a move.
